In the scope of the curricular unit of Eco-design and Eco-efficiency students are challenged to develop an analysis project of a selected product making use of an eco-design approach. Selected product can be a household appliance, a bicycle, etc. It is not mandatory to contact a production enterprise, but it can be useful. The aim of this work is to develop and consolidate knowledge on eco-design product project, including use of sustainable raw materials, processing and transformation technologies, product life cycle analysis (LCA) and application of circular economy principles.
Student must select a specific product, which may already be on the market, in the process of being launched or at an embryonic stage of design. As referred, the partnership with production enterprise can be useful to attain technical information about the selected product and the fabrication processes used. This product should be the subject of a survey of data addressing its complete life cycle, from the origin of the raw materials to the end of life, as well as the production processes. The data obtained should then be analyzed using LCA tools (openLCA, or another equivalent) to trace the its sustainability profile and list eventual product innovation recommendations.
The assignment is done in groups 3 to 4 persons. The assignment represents 40% of the final grade.
